Forward New Orleans For Public Schools
Forward New Orleans for Public Schools (FNOPS) is a diverse, issue-focused community initiative that is committed to improving the quality of public education in New Orleans. Led by the Business Council, FNOPS includes more than 20 civic, neighborhood and business organizations, such as the Urban League of Louisiana, Stand for Children, and the Orleans Parish Education Network, among others.
The quality of public education in New Orleans has steadily increased over the past decade, due in large part to the city’s unique system of charter schools. Yet there remains room for improvement, particularly in making an excellent education available to all students. The Orleans Parish School Board, as the primary policymaker on districtwide issues, must continue to increase the number of high-quality school options for students and hold all public schools accountable to established performance standards.
To that end, FNOPS creates issue-based platforms surrounding Orleans Parish School Board elections. FNOPS seeks a pledge from each School Board candidate to implement the action items associated with each issue; those pledges are then published prior to the election. FNOPS holds School Board members accountable by monitoring and publicly reporting on their progress toward achieving the action items during the term.
Through its efforts to identify priority education issues and hold School Board members accountable for their actions, FNOPS aims to help create a public school system that is dedicated to academic excellence and managing resources fairly and equitably for all enrolled students.
